DOT Full Form – Department of Telecommunications

The Department of Telecommunications, abbreviated to DoT, is a department of the Ministry of Communications of the executive branch of the Government of India.

It also enforces wireless regulatory measures by monitoring wireless transmission of all users in the country.

 

The Indian Telecommunications Service, widely known as ITS, and earlier known as ‘Telegraph Engineering Service Class I’ (TES Class I) is a Central Engineering Service (gazetted) under Group ‘A’ of the executive branch of the Government of India.

The appointment to this service is done through Combined Engineering Services Exam held every year by “Union Public Service Commission” (UPSC) of India.

 

Metro Rail Corporations etc. At present, ITS officers are also working in many Departments of central government and state government on deputation.

The service was created to meet the technical and managerial functions of the government in areas related to telecommunications.

 

 

 

 

The officers of ITS are working in senior management and administrative positions in the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), Telecom Enforcement Resource and Monitoring (TERM Cells) and now known as

DoT “Licensed Service Area”,(LSA),

Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL),

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL),

Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT),

Unique Identification Authority of India (UID),

for years by this permanent cadre of central government engineers called the “Indian Telecommunications Service” (ITS).

 

 

The “Department of Telecommunications” (DOT) had been managed, both technically and administratively.

History :-

Telecom services have been recognized the world-over as an important tool for socio-economic development for a nation and hence telecom infrastructure is treated as a crucial factor to realize the socio-economic objectives in India.

Accordingly, the Department of Telecom has been formulating developmental policies for the accelerated growth of the telecommunication services.

Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications (India), under the Government of India, is the Cadre Controlling Authority of the Indian Telecommunication Service.

 

The Department is also responsible for grant of licenses for various telecom services like Unified Access Service Internet and VSAT service.

The Department is also responsible for frequency management in the field of radio communication in close coordination with the international bodies.
